Fairtrade Quiz Night

John Fisher High School recently held a Fair Trade Quiz Night. The following report was written by one of the pupils.

On Friday 9th March, at the end of Fairtrade Fortnight, a hugely successful and very enjoyable Fairtrade at Fisher Evening took place in our school hall.  This event was organised by Mr Dean and the School Enterprise Council and follows on from the very successful event that was held last year which saw The John Fisher School named as the winner of the Margaret Demidecka Fairtrade Award 2011.  This is an award given to the best Secondary school nationally for their work promoting Fairtrade within a school.

Those of you that couldn’t be at Friday’s event missed a fantastic night. The school hall was packed and looked very festive with Fairtrade pictures and bunting decorating the room.  Team tables were laid out, each with complimentary bottles of wine, nibbles and goodie bags which had been donated by Fairtrade companies for the evening.

Fairtrade stalls selling items such as clothes, jewellery, chocolate, bags, books etc lined the hall and the bar did a roaring trade selling Fairtrade soft drinks as well as Fairtrade alcoholic ones!

The main event was the quiz and the tables soon filled with teams eager to win one of the main prizes. Staff, parents and friends all joined in as James McDonald and Joe Mendonca, both looking very smart in their suits, became quizmasters for the evening. The atmosphere in the hall was lively and competitive and great fun was had by all. For the second year running, one of the staff teams, with an unmentionable (!) team name won.

During the interval, the Enterprise Council video was shown. This showed the Council members on a day out in London promoting the Fairtrade message with some of them dressed as a banana, and members of the school (including a red clad Mr. Dean dressed up as Mr. Incredible) dancing whilst wearing Fairtrade t shirts. Much room for improvement boys if you want to take it up as a dance troupe! The boys from the Enterprise Council all worked hard to collect team quiz sheets and they sold all the raffle tickets for the fantastic prizes that had been donated.

Well over £2000 was raised and the Enterprise Council would like to thank all those who attended for making the evening such a memorable one. Particular thanks must go to Mr. Dean for his tireless work for the team and all other members of staff, especially Miss Malik, who helped with setting up and with the excellent jacket potato supper that was included in the price.
