Cheap bananas threaten farmers’ futures

Alberio Alfonso ‘Foncho’ Cantillo is a 43 year old farmer from Colombia whose livelihood depends on bananas.  He knows the difference a fair, stable price for his bananas can make, because the majority of the ones he grows he sells are fairtrade.

However Foncho also knows that our favourite fruit snow sold so cheaply by most UK supermarkets that many banana farmers and workers are being trapped in poverty.  Shockingly many still can’t afford to put enough food on the table for their families or provide the basics such as education and healthcare.

We need to stick with Foncho to make bananas fair.  Sign the petition and find out more about Foncho and the campaign.

Council snacks

Sutton Council have confirmed that their vending machine at its Denmark Road offices stocks a minimum of two fairtrade items.

We are pleased that the Council is supporting fairtrade, but we would like to see them do more.

Eco Audits at Sutton Council

During this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight Sutton Council undertook eco audits.

This took place during the second week of the fortnight which coincided with Climate Week and happened at the Council’s main offices in St Nicholas Way and Denmark Road.

A fair-trade chocolates were left on the desks where staff had switched off equipment.

Fairtrade Coffee Morning

Carshaton Beeches Baptist Church is holding a Fairtrade Coffee Morning and Special Spring Plant Sale on May 31st between 10am and 12 noon.

It is a perfect time to stock up on plants for the garden or as a gift, so pop along to Banstead Road, Carshalton, and enjoy a fairtrade tea or coffee, pick up some fairtrade food, find greeting cards, fabrics and gifts.

Sutton Council tell us they have  handed out our new posters to the Parks for display in the community notice boards and they have also been sent to all libraries.  Look out for them!
