Fairtrade Fortnight 2019

Theme – She Deserves a Living Income.

Many cocoa farmers, men and women, are underpaid, exploited and can’t earn enough to live on. This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight campaign was based on the story of women cocoa farmers in Cote d’Ivoire and how Fairtrade supports and empowers women. Click here to learn more.

Local Fairtrade Fortnight Events

Sat Feb 16th – Fairtrade stall and short film at afternoon and evening shows at the Community Cinema at Carshalton Methodist Church, Ruskin Road. Fairtrade chocolate cakes made by members of St. Nicholas church were very popular!

Sat March 9th – Fairtrade stall, all day at Sutton Central Library. The Mayor, Steve Cook, visited and gave his support.

Fairtrade Displays in all Sutton Borough libraries were prominent throughout Fairtrade Fortnight.

Did you celebrate World Chocolate Day on 7th July 2019?

Six million people globally depend on growing cocoa for their livelihoods. Fairtrade has breathed a new lease of life into entire cocoa farming communities in the poorest parts of the world.

Facts about Fairtrade chocolate

1. In 1994, Green & Black’s Maya Gold chocolate bar became the first Fairtrade-certified product in the UK.

2. Divine chocolate company. Launched in 1998, it was the first farmer-owned confectionery brand in the UK.

3. Cocoa is produced in tropical environments between 10ºN and 10ºS of the Equator.  Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire are the top selling countries.

4. Cocoa trees yield pods at peak production levels by the fifth year, but for all their hard work, cocoa farmers gain very little from a profitable global cocoa trade.

5. Most cocoa farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire live on less than $1 a day. Poverty, and related issues such as child labour, is the key challenge faced by cocoa growing communities. With Fairtrade sales, farmer cooperatives receive the Fairtrade Premium which they spend on improving the quality and productivity of their farms, to increase incomes.

6. 25% of all Fairtrade cocoa growers are women.

7. Education is key to the future. Fairtrade Africa currently trains cocoa farmers in financial management, governance, good agricultural practices, gender and child labour.

8. Fairtrade chocolate accounts for 12% of total sales in the UK – and the trend for Fairtrade-certified cocoa is growing.

Frosty start to day for Frost Fair

The Sutton Fairtrade team are down at the Frost Fair in Carshalton today, so why not pop along and find out a bit more about fairtrade and how you can support fairtrade.  It would be great to see you.  And rumour has it that there are samples to try out … there might even be some fairtrade chocolate!

Countdown to Christmas Coffee Morning

Start your countdown to Christmas by going to the Fairtrade Coffee Morning at Carshalton Beeches Baptist Church, Banstead Road, Carshalton on Saturday November 29, 2014 between 10am to 12 noon.

There will be the usual Fairtrade goodies and a glitzy Christmas Present Stall where all the family can buy quality present at incredibly low prices.

All are welcome – bring a friend.
