London recently celebrated five years of being the world’s largest Fairtrade city and representatives of Sutton joined the celebrations at an event at City Hall on 21 October 2013.

The milestone came shortly after the London Assembly renewed its commitment to supporting Fairtrade in the capital, urging the city’s boroughs to ‘walk the talk’ of its Fairtrade status.

Sophi Tranchell, Chair of Fairtrade London Steering Committee and Managing Director of Divine Chocolate, said:

We are delighted to have reached the five year mark in London – testament to the hard work that’s been put in by campaigners, local authorities, schools, faith groups and universities in the city” and this includes Sutton.

London can act as a stalwart of Fairtrade to other cities around the world, showing not only the positive impact being a Fairtrade city has on farmers in developing countries, but also on London itself.

Rosie Boycott, who represented Mayor Boris Johnson, said the Mayor was very pleased London ‘was doing so well’. She continued: ‘

I am delighted to help Fairtrade London celebrate its 5th birthday. Fairtrade has shown people with the passion to achieve a fairer world can intervene to manage markets for the good of the wider economy and society. This is an incredible movement that is going from strength to strength in this city

Judy Walsh Chair of Sutton Fairtrade Community Group said:

Support for Fairtrade products in Sutton Borough continues to grow amongst the public, schools, faith groups, catering and retail businesses.

Sutton achieved its Fairtrade status in 2007.  Currently 22 of London’s 33 boroughs have Fairtrade status, with another three working towards it.
