It was a busy day at the Fair-trade stall in the St Nicholas Centre on Saturday 7 March 2015.  Sutton’s Mayor, Cllr Arthur Hookway also joined the local Fair-trade team.

Fairtrade Fortnight 2015

Fairtrade fortnight is on from 23 February to 8 March this year.

 

If you are a school, church or community group you can register for some free resources from the Fairtrade Foundation.

Eco Audits at Sutton Council

During this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight Sutton Council undertook eco audits.

This took place during the second week of the fortnight which coincided with Climate Week and happened at the Council’s main offices in St Nicholas Way and Denmark Road.

A fair-trade chocolates were left on the desks where staff had switched off equipment.

Go bananas this year

Fairtrade Fortnight runs between  February 24 and March 9

This year the campaign is ‘Make Bananas Fair’ and aims to end the supermarket price war over the cost of bananas which is driving farmers and workers in banana producing countries into poverty.

Fairtrade and John Fisher

The John Fisher School is holding a Fairtrade event on Saturday 1 March at 7pm in the sports hall.
The ticket price of £10 includes a fish and chip supper.  Tables are for 8-10 people.

This year FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT is taking place between February  24 and March 9, and the message is a wider one that just raising awareness about the importance of Fairtrade – the campaign “ Stick with Foncho to abolish unfair bananas “ is about trade justice .

How the Fairtrade system works

If you are interested in finding out more about how the Fairtrade system works  and makes a difference – there are two recently published reports: 

1. Fairtrade International’s 2012-2013 Annual Report, which contains lots of useful statistics on the scale and nature of the Fairtrade system, including summaries of several recent impact studies.
2. The equivalent bodies to the Fairtrade Foundation in Germany and Switzerland recently published a detailed and interesting impact study of Fairtrade that looks at six commodities and three kinds of producer organisation across three continents.
